I rated this book five stars because it is the exact book I was looking for as a teenager that I couldnât seem to find anywhere in my school library. I almost gave up until I recently came across it. The drama is real, the characters feel real and it isnât loaded with teenage angst. I wanted a story where the main characters had experienced terrible things and were doing their best to continue on in spite of it, which is exactly what this book delivers. This book is loaded with many emotions, heartwarming, tragic and hilarious, and it takes you on an incredible journey. It does not have the traditionally expected dramatic YA romantic plot line, but itâs better because it doesnât. The relationship between the male and female lead feels like an old married couple that bickers but will always stick together, even though itâs a platonic friendship. Itâs so refreshing. Thank you Frances!

I’m slowly turning into a Frances Hardinge’s fan. I would give her my voice and my childhood memories to trade for another one of her wonderful books. They are full of wonder, creepy tales and magic. This story, like the others, is beautifully written. The words are woven with magic and love. Seriously, read that book.

Bought as a gift and very well received.

This world is very weird, which means assuming you can anticipate what will happen is right out, which is why I took over two months to finish it–possibly the slowest I’ve ever read fiction I was enjoying.Kellen is, among other things, every teen with impulse control. Nettle is every teen who’s seen too much and can’t lose Kellen to his impulses. There are spiders, sort of. There are a lot of strange creatures. You think you’ve met them all, but you’re wrong so often you give up trying to keep track and just work on staying afloat with the characters! If you’re in the mood for strangeness, try this novel.

I really love reading this author’s work. It was the first book I’ve read in a year, experiencing a reading drought, but like an old friend this writer’s style welcomes you to the fireside, and like a comforting blanket shelters you from the outside world, for isn’t that what true stories do. Thank you Frances for your beautiful worlds you can only create!!!
